Why Girls Need Martial Arts

For awhile now, almost every girl I know has taken a self-defense class which is awesome! While this is important, there is a bit of a stereotype that this is the main reason why girls need martial arts, and that’s just not true. There are LOTS of reasons why girls need martial arts and we’re going to break them down for you!

Why Girls Need Martial Arts

It builds confidence.

It’s important for boys AND girls to continually build their confidence. Not just in their physical abilities, but also in other areas. Confidently answering a math problem (whether it’s wrong or right is irrelevant, but being confident enough to want to try is important), or maybe it’s confidence to stand up for a friend being bullied. You get the idea. Martial arts is a great way to do this and we see girls excelling in this area every day!

It’s a healthy lifestyle

By observing healthy role models, girls are more likely to emulate those same choices! Whether this is through healthy eating, exercising, using martial arts as a stress relief tool, working toward goals, or building strong relationships, it’s a great lifestyle to instill in both our girls and boys.

It teaches you to love yourself

Because your body is both your weapon and armor in martial arts, training regularly will teach you to respect and treat it well. This means you’ll learn to lead a healthier lifestyle with sufficient rest and fuel up with the right food.

When you pick up these good habits, you’ll slowly become a lean, mean fighting machine.

It teaches you self-defense

I mentioned that self-defense is still an important aspect of martial arts and is certainly one of the reasons why girls need martial arts. I’ll leave you with a few statistics from the Bureau of Justice:

  • In 2016, U.S. residents age 12 or older experienced 5.7 million violent victimizations
  • In 2016, 1,756,490 females were victims of violence

Do you have any other reasons to add to this list? Let us know about them in the comments!
